Logistics isn’t always smooth sailing—things happen. Tracking delays, warehouse bottlenecks, and unexpected hiccups can throw shipments off course. This guide breaks down common Middle Mile issues, why they happen, and how to keep things moving so your shipments stay on track.

1. Shipment Not Appearing in the Portal

Issue: Your shipment is not showing up in the Pattern portal.

Possible Causes:

  • Carton data (dimensions, weights, quantities) is missing in Seller Central.
  • The shipment is not properly linked to a Middle Mile order.
  • Data sync delays between Seller Central and Pattern's system.

Solution:

  • Verify that all shipment details are correctly entered in Seller Central.
  • Wait a few hours and check again, as data synchronization can take time.
  • If the shipment is still missing, reach out to MM support (support.middlemile@pattern.com) for assistance.

2. Unexpected Amazon Placement Fees

Issue: Amazon charges additional placement fees for your shipments.

Possible Causes:

  • You’re shipping fewer than five of the same carton type to an FBA fulfillment center.
  • The shipment contains mixed SKUs that don’t meet Amazon’s optimized routing requirements.

Solution:

  • Ship at least five of the same SKU in one shipment to reduce fees.
  • Work with Pattern to consolidate shipments whenever possible.

3. Shipments Stuck in Transit

Issue: The shipment has not arrived at the Amazon Fulfillment Center (FC) within the expected time frame.

Possible Causes:

  • Carrier delays due to weather, congestion, or mechanical issues.
  • Warehouse processing times taking longer than usual.
  • Peak Season.

Solution:

  • Use the tracking tools in the MM portal to monitor shipment status.
  • If tracking hasn’t updated for several days, contact MM support for further investigation.
  • Ensure all shipment details were correctly entered to avoid routing delays.

4. Missing or Delayed POD (Proof of Delivery)

Issue: The Proof of Delivery (POD) for a shipment is missing or delayed.

Possible Causes:

  • Amazon has not yet updated the delivery confirmation.
  • The carrier has not uploaded the POD document.
  • The shipment is still being processed at the FC.

Solution:

  • Check Amazon Freight for status updates.
  • If the POD is not available, request it from Pattern’s support team.
  • If Amazon is processing the shipment, wait for their system to update.
  • Contact support (support.middlemile@pattern.com) for assistance locating the POD.

5. Amazon FC Not Unloading Shipments Promptly

Issue: Shipments are sitting at the Amazon FC for an extended period without being unloaded.

Possible Causes:

  • Amazon FC congestion and capacity issues.
  • Amazon Freight mechanical failures or scheduling problems.
  • Lack of communication from Amazon Freight about delays.

Solution:

  • Reach out to Amazon Freight for an update on trailer unloading status.
  • If an extended delay is impacting inventory levels, escalate the issue through Amazon’s support channels.
  • Work with MM support to track and expedite resolution.

6. Incorrect or Incomplete Shipment Data

Issue: A shipment is rejected or delayed due to missing or incorrect information.

Possible Causes:

  • Inaccurate carton dimensions or weights in Seller Central.
  • Incorrect pallet labeling or non-compliant packaging.
  • Mismatched shipment IDs between Seller Central and MM.

Solution:

  • Double-check all carton data before creating shipments.
  • Follow MM pallet and labeling guidelines strictly.
  • If an error is detected, update the information as soon as possible and notify MM support.

7. Pallet & Packaging Issues

Issue: Shipments are flagged for non-compliant palletization or packaging.

Possible Causes:

  • Using non-standard pallets (CHEP, plastic, or oversized).
  • Overhanging cartons exceeding the pallet footprint.
  • Insufficient shrink-wrap or loose stacking.

Solution:

  • Always use standard 40 x 48-inch, 4-way pallets.
  • Ensure cartons do not exceed the pallet edges by more than 1 inch.
  • Securely shrink-wrap pallets to prevent movement during transit.

8. Freight Scheduling Conflicts

Issue: Carrier pickup or delivery scheduling issues cause delays.

Possible Causes:

  • Freight shipments not properly scheduled through GoRamp.
  • The carrier misses the scheduled pickup window.
  • Unexpected warehouse closures or capacity limitations.

Solution:

  • Schedule all freight deliveries through GoRamp.
  • Confirm pickup dates with the carrier and Pattern in advance.
  • Communicate early if a reschedule is needed to prevent delays.

Final Thoughts: Staying Ahead of Issues

Troubleshooting Middle Mile challenges requires a proactive approach. By ensuring accurate shipment data, following pallet and packaging guidelines, and monitoring tracking updates, you can reduce the risk of delays and avoid unexpected disruptions.

If an issue arises, the best course of action is to escalate it through the appropriate channels—whether it’s Pattern support, Amazon Freight, or the carrier. Staying informed and prepared helps keep your shipments on track and your business running smoothly.
